Packing to Run Japan: The Season-by-Season Gear Guide

Every ruined run I've had in Japan traces back to the same mistake: packing for the Japan in my head instead of the Japan on the forecast.

Japan has four emphatic seasons, and they don't negotiate. Tokyo in August and Tokyo in January are, from a runner's perspective, different countries. Here's the honest season-by-season packing guide — including the things you should deliberately not pack, because buying them here is half the fun.

First, the year-round core

Whatever the season, these earn their suitcase space:

  • Your broken-in shoes. Obvious, but stated for the record: Japan is a walking country and you'll log 15–20k steps on top of your runs. Bring the pair your feet already trust. (Finding replacement shoes here in larger sizes — above roughly 28cm/US10 — can be hit or miss outside the big-city flagship stores.)
  • A running belt or small vest. Your phone doubles as your wallet in Japan (transit card + payments), so you need it on every run. A belt that holds a phone and a coin or two is the whole kit.
  • GPS watch. If you use one, bring it — and note your hotel's location before you explore-run. Tokyo's street grid is beautiful chaos.
  • Blister supplies. The 20k-step days find your weaknesses.

And the golden rule that shapes everything below: you can under-pack safely. Between konbini, Don Quijote, Uniqlo, and some of the best running stores in the world, Japan will sell you anything you forgot within an hour of realizing you forgot it.

Summer (June–September): respect it or it will humble you

Tokyo summer is 30–35°C with humidity that makes the air feel upholstered. This is the season that ends running vacations.

Pack:

  • The lightest, most breathable kit you own — two sets minimum, because nothing dries overnight in this humidity
  • A running cap and your highest-effort sunscreen
  • Electrolyte strategy: bring tabs if you're loyal to a brand, but know that Pocari Sweat and Aquarius are in every vending machine — Japan solved on-route hydration decades ago

Adopt the local rules: run before 7am, full stop. Watch for rainy season (tsuyu) in June–mid-July — pack a packable shell or embrace warm rain running, which honestly has its charms.

Buy there: cooling towels, sweat-wipe sheets, and the entire genre of Japanese summer-survival products at any drugstore. The locals' anti-heat technology is extensive and it works.

Autumn (October–November): the season everything is for

The payoff season. Crisp mornings, brilliant foliage, and the reason Japan's marathon calendar clusters here.

Pack: standard mild-weather kit plus one light layer for mornings. That's it — autumn asks almost nothing and gives everything. Ginkgo avenues in Tokyo peak in late November; maple in the temple towns follows. Build your longest runs into this season if you can choose your dates.

Winter (December–February): secretly elite running weather

Here's the underrated truth: winter is arguably Japan's best running season. Tokyo/Kanagawa winters are cold (roughly 2–12°C) but dry and relentlessly sunny — and this is peak Mt. Fuji visibility, when the coastal runs pay out their full jackpot.

Pack:

  • Tights and long sleeves, light gloves, a headband or beanie
  • One windproof layer — the dry cold is friendly, the wind is not
  • Layers you can shed: you'll start cold and finish warm

Buy there: Uniqlo Heattech as your base layers. Locals live in it, it's inexpensive, and buying warm layers on arrival beats sacrificing suitcase space. This is less a tip than a national institution.

Spring (March–May): pack for two seasons at once

Spring is glorious and indecisive — a 10°C swing between morning and afternoon is normal, and cherry blossom season (late March–early April, timing varies year to year) can be warm and golden or windy and cold.

Pack: the autumn kit plus one extra warm layer, and something with a zipper you can vent. A light shell earns its place — spring showers are frequent.

Know: sakura season is peak crowd season. Your dawn runs become even more valuable — a cherry-lined river path at 6am versus the same path at noon is the difference between a dream and a queue.

What NOT to pack (buy-there list)

Save the suitcase space; acquiring these is part of the experience:

  • Base layers and casual warmth → Uniqlo
  • Electrolyte drinks → any vending machine
  • Post-run protein → the konbini (I've written an entire guide to this)
  • Rain ponchos, cooling gear, pocket warmers (kairo — winter's tiny miracle) → any konbini or drugstore
  • Souvenir-grade running gear → Japan's flagship running stores and Japanese brands like Asics and Mizuno on home turf are a pilgrimage in themselves; leave room in the bag for the return trip

The one-bag test

My whole packing philosophy in one line: pack the shoes, the watch, two run kits for the season, and trust Japan for the rest. The country is essentially one giant, impeccably organized aid station.
