About This Course

The Sagami River descends from the Tanzawa mountains through Kanagawa Prefecture to Sagami Bay, and its broad embankment offers one of the region's finest and most underrated long-distance running environments. Unlike the Tama River — which marks the Tokyo-Kanagawa border and receives heavy use from both sides — the Sagami River is primarily within Kanagawa and sees far fewer runners, giving the route a genuinely quiet, rural character even close to Ebina and Atsugi. The paved embankment roads and gravel paths run on both banks, with bridge crossings at regular intervals for flexible loop planning. From Ebina, running north along the river toward Atsugi takes you through the Kanagawa interior, with the Tanzawa mountain range (home to some of Japan's finest trail running) rising to the southwest and Mt. Fuji occasionally visible above the western ridge on clear winter days. Southward from Ebina toward the coast, the river widens and the landscape opens dramatically as it approaches Hiratsuka and the bay. Toilet facilities are available at riverside parks approximately every 4–5 km. The Ebina Sports Park near the river also provides a convenient rest and water stop. For runners based in Yokohama, Ebina is reachable in about 35 minutes on the Sotetsu Line from Yokohama Station.
