About This Course

The Tama River is a major river running from the mountains of western Tokyo to Tokyo Bay, and its embankment paths are the preferred venue for long-distance runners and cyclists in the greater Tokyo area. Unlike the compact urban loops of central Tokyo, the Tama River offers a genuinely long, uninterrupted course — runners can go as far as they like in either direction, with easy train access at regular intervals for flexible out-and-back or point-to-point routes. The embankment is grass and gravel alongside the river, with a paved service road above. Both surfaces are suitable for running. The most popular central access point is Futako-Tamagawa, where the river is particularly wide and scenic. From here, running downstream (south toward the bay) for 10 km reaches the Rokugo Bridge at Kawasaki. Running upstream (north/west) takes you through increasingly rural scenery toward the hills of Tama. Toilet facilities are available at parks approximately every 3–5 km. The course is used by local running clubs for everything from 10 km tempo runs to full marathon training and ultramarathon long runs.
