About This Course
The Arakawa River flows through northeastern Tokyo from Saitama Prefecture toward Tokyo Bay, and its wide embankment offers one of the longest and least crowded long-distance running environments in the greater Tokyo metropolitan area. The river is wider and the sky bigger here than on the Tama or Sumida rivers — the sense of open space is distinctive, making long runs feel genuinely expansive rather than urban. The paved and gravel embankment paths run on both the east and west banks, giving runners the option to plan out-and-back or loop routes across the bridges at regular intervals. The most popular access point for tourists and visitors is Akabane Station, from which the embankment is a 10-minute walk across Akabane-Iwabuchi Lock. From this point, running south along the west bank reaches Senju Ohashi bridge (10 km) and continues to the river mouth near Nishikasai (30+ km from Akabane). On clear winter days, the distant Chichibu mountain range is visible to the northwest — a dramatic backdrop for a long morning run. Riverside parks with toilet facilities are spaced every 3–5 km.
