About This Course
The Imperial Palace Loop is Tokyo's most iconic running route, circling the outer moat of the Imperial Palace through the heart of the city. The 5 km course is entirely flat and paved, passing landmark gates including Sakuradamon, Kikyo-mon, and the famous Nijubashi bridge. Runners travel counterclockwise by convention. The wide, shaded paths are busy on weekday mornings and weekend afternoons but never crowded enough to be difficult. Portable toilets and water fountains are available at several points. The adjacent Imperial Palace East Gardens offer a scenic detour. In spring, the route is lined with hundreds of cherry trees, making it one of the most breathtaking places to run in Japan. The course is completely free to use and requires no registration.
