About This Course
Running along the Sumida River offers one of the most visually rich urban running experiences in Japan. The 10 km route follows the western embankment from the historic Asakusa district south to the Tsukiji area, passing under twelve distinctive bridges — each with its own architectural character. Landmarks visible along the way include the golden Asahi Beer Hall (known as the 'golden flame' building), the Senso-ji gate pagoda, and the ever-present Tokyo Skytree tower. The path is paved throughout and runs at river level, with gentle staircases connecting to street level at each bridge. Toilets are available at parks along the route. For a sunset or evening run, the riverside is beautifully lit and considerably cooler than central city streets. The course can be run one way (10 km) with a return by Tokyo Metro, or as a 20 km out-and-back.
