About This Course

Most visitors to Tokyo never make it to the eastern bayside, which is exactly why Kasai Rinkai Park is such a good run. It is one of the largest parks in the city, built out on reclaimed land along Tokyo Bay, and the scale is immediately obvious — wide open lawns, long sweeping promenades, pine groves, and a horizon that actually exists. For a runner used to dodging pedestrians in central Tokyo, the freedom here is the appeal: you can run for several kilometers without stopping once, without a single traffic light, and without weaving through anyone. The main seaside promenade traces the water with the bay on one side and grass and pines on the other, and the park's landmark Ferris wheel — one of the largest in Japan — sits above the treeline as a constant reference point. A comfortable circuit of the main paths comes to roughly 6 km, and you can shorten or extend freely by cutting across the lawns or looping the bird sanctuary side. The surface is smooth asphalt throughout and almost perfectly flat. Access could hardly be simpler: Kasai-Rinkai-Koen Station on the JR Keiyo Line sits directly at the park entrance, roughly 15 minutes from Tokyo Station, which makes this a genuinely easy trip even for a short morning run. The one honest caveat is shade — the promenade is open and exposed, which is glorious in spring, autumn and winter but punishing in the July and August heat. In summer, run at dawn and carry water, though the park does have fountains and vending machines at regular intervals.
