About This Course

The Meguro River is not a river in the dramatic sense — it is a narrow, concrete-banked urban canal — and that is precisely what makes it work. The cherry trees planted along both banks lean out over the water until their branches meet in the middle, creating a continuous pink tunnel for kilometers during the bloom. It is the single most photographed cherry blossom spot in Tokyo, and for about ten days each spring it is also one of the most crowded places in the city. Runners have an unfair advantage here: at 6am the path is empty, the water is still, and the blossoms glow in the early light with nobody in the frame. By 10am you would struggle to walk it, let alone run. Outside blossom season the route quietly becomes one of central Tokyo's most pleasant everyday runs — flat, entirely car-free, easy to follow, and lined with the kind of independent cafés, bakeries and coffee roasters that make Naka-Meguro one of the city's most livable neighborhoods. The standard out-and-back from Nakameguro Station covers about 4 km; continuing downstream toward Meguro Station or cutting up toward Daikanyama and Ebisu easily extends the run to 8 km or more. The path is paved throughout with a very slight downstream gradient, and there are small riverside parks with public toilets along the way. There are no water fountains directly on the path, but vending machines and convenience stores are never more than a couple of minutes away. Note that the riverside path is narrow in places and shared with pedestrians and cyclists — keep your pace conversational and yield generously, especially near the bridges.
