About This Course
Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden offers a tranquil running environment in the heart of Shinjuku, with wide paved and grass paths winding through its 58-hectare grounds. The outer perimeter loop measures approximately 3.5 km and passes through distinct garden zones — the formal French Parterre garden, the naturalistic English Landscape Garden, and the serene Japanese Traditional Garden. Unlike Tokyo's free running venues, Shinjuku Gyoen charges a 500 yen entry fee (adults), which helps maintain its exceptional standard of care. The garden is open Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00 am to 4:30 pm (last entry 4:00 pm), and is closed on Mondays and over the New Year period. During cherry blossom season (late March to early April), the 1,500 cherry trees make this one of the most visually remarkable places to run in Japan, though it is also at its busiest. Early Tuesday or Wednesday mornings outside of Golden Week are the best times for a quiet run.
