About This Course

Toyosu and Harumi are the newest part of Tokyo's waterfront, built on reclaimed land and largely developed within the last two decades — which means the running infrastructure is unusually good. The promenades are wide, smooth and recently laid, the parks are generous, and because this is a residential and commercial district rather than a tourist destination, the paths are close to empty early in the morning. The run traces the water from Toyosu around toward Harumi, with Tokyo Bay open on one side and glass towers on the other. The Rainbow Bridge sits across the water and catches the light beautifully at sunrise; the Olympic Village built for the 2020 Games occupies a large part of Harumi and has since been converted into housing. There are almost no road crossings once you are on the waterfront, which makes it one of the easier places in Tokyo to hold a steady pace. Two things make this course distinctive. The first is the light: facing across the bay to the east and south, sunrise here is genuinely spectacular, and the water is usually mirror-flat at dawn. The second is breakfast — Toyosu fish market, the successor to Tsukiji's inner market, is a short jog away, and the sushi restaurants inside open early enough that finishing a run and eating there at 7am is entirely realistic. The honest drawback is character: this is a modern, planned district, and if you want old Tokyo you should run the Sumida River course instead. There is also very little shade, so summer running here means going out at first light.
